How to wash a makeup sponge so it actually lasts

A blender that is rinsed properly keeps its bounce for months. One that is not becomes a hard, discoloured lump within weeks — and the difference is almost entirely about how quickly it dries.

Why sponges fail early

Latex-free blenders are open-cell foam. They soak up product and water and hold both, and a damp sponge left in a drawer is the ideal place for bacteria. Nothing about the material is fragile; it is the moisture that does the damage.

Most people rinse the surface and stop there. The foundation that sank into the middle stays put, hardens, and stops the sponge expanding evenly. That is when it starts dragging product across the skin instead of stippling it.

The daily rinse

Run the sponge under warm water until it is fully swollen, then squeeze repeatedly until the water leaving it is clear. This takes longer than people expect — a heavily used sponge can need a minute of squeezing.

Do this on the day you use it. A sponge rinsed the next morning has already spent a night damp, which is exactly the condition you are trying to avoid.

The weekly clean

Once a week the sponge needs a cleanser, not just water. Work a solid or liquid brush cleanser into the wet sponge, squeeze it through, and keep going until no colour comes out.

Solid cleansers are easier to control on a sponge than liquids because you can rub the sponge directly on the bar. Liquid formulas work better on brushes, where you need the product to travel into the bristles.

Drying is the part that matters

Squeeze out as much water as you can in a towel, then leave the sponge somewhere with air on all sides. A closed drawer, a zipped bag or the bottom of a cup are all ways to keep it damp.

If a sponge still smells after cleaning, the drying is the problem, not the cleanser. Change where it dries before you change what you wash it with.

Brushes need the opposite care

A brush should be washed with the head pointing down and dried the same way. Water that runs up into the ferrule dissolves the glue holding the bristles, and the shedding that follows is permanent.

Never stand a wet brush upright in a cup. It is the single most common reason a good brush starts losing hairs.

When to give up on a sponge

A blender that no longer springs back to shape has done its job. Tearing, permanent staining that will not shift, or a sponge that stays dense when wet all mean the foam has collapsed.

Blenders are consumables. Replacing one every few months is normal and much cheaper than the foundation wasted by a sponge that has stopped absorbing evenly.

A realistic weekly routine

Rinse after every use, cleanse once a week, dry in open air, and check the texture monthly. That is the whole routine, and it takes a couple of minutes.

Tools that get this treatment stay usable long enough that the cost per use becomes trivial — which is the only reason to buy a decent one in the first place.

Where this sits in the shop

Eve Beauty Source groups its range into 6 sections, so it is usually quicker to start from the group than to scroll the whole shop. These are the ones with stock on the shelf right now:

If none of those is obviously right, the full shop lists everything on one page.

What it costs

Across the 19 items currently listed, prices run from $3.79 to $349.00, with the middle of the range around $7.98. That spread is worth knowing before you start comparing, because the cheapest and dearest options here are usually not the same kind of product at all.

Shipping is a flat $4.99 per order and free once the order reaches $39.00, which is set out in full on the Shipping Policy page.

Questions that come up with this

Do you sell the same range online as in the shop?
The online shelf is a selected part of the counter — the tools we restock most often. If you saw something on 8th Avenue that is not listed, call +1 212-969-0030 and we will check the shelf for you.

How long does an order take to arrive?
Orders leave within one to two business days. Delivery inside the United States is typically another two to five business days depending on the address.

What does shipping cost?
A flat $4.25 per order, and nothing at all once the basket reaches $32.00.

The FAQ page covers the rest.
